Cambridge GP Dr. David Stokes evaluates ChatGPT’s recommendations—and adds the one test it missed.
Introduction
As AI tools like ChatGPT gain popularity in health advice, I decided to test its insight. I asked: What are the five most important health checks for someone over 50? Here’s what it told me—and what I think you should actually prioritise.
1. Blood Pressure Check
High blood pressure is the silent driver behind heart attacks, strokes, and kidney damage. It’s one of the most crucial checks for anyone over 50.
✅ Tip: Monitor at home or with your GP. If it’s consistently over 135/85 mmHg, it’s worth acting on.
2. Blood Sugar / Diabetes Screening
Type 2 diabetes often creeps up with no symptoms. If you’re over 50, overweight (especially around the middle), or have a family history—get tested.
✅ Test: HbA1c blood test (measures long-term glucose levels).
3. Cholesterol & Lipids
Cholesterol is just one part of the heart disease puzzle. A lipid profile helps identify your risk, especially when combined with blood pressure and lifestyle.
✅ When to test: At least once after 50, especially with risk factors.
4. Cancer Screening
Cancer screening is more nuanced. In the UK, standard screenings include:
• Bowel cancer (FIT test after 50)
• Cervical screening (women 25–64)
• Breast screening (mammogram)
• Prostate (PSA blood test—still controversial)
✅ Always speak to your doctor about risks vs. benefits for you.
5. Liver & Kidney Function
Routine blood tests may reveal early signs of liver or kidney issues—often before symptoms.
✅ Especially important if you drink alcohol, take regular medication, or have high blood pressure.
❗ The Health Check ChatGPT Missed
One of the most important—and most overlooked—health checks?
Waist circumference.
Excess belly fat (visceral fat) is a strong predictor of diabetes, heart disease, and even cancer.
Healthy targets (per NICE):
• Men: Under 94 cm (37 inches)
• Women: Under 80 cm (31.5 inches)
🔍 Summary
ChatGPT gave a solid list—but missed the deeper insight that comes from real clinical experience. As a private GP, I tailor checks based on individual risk—not a one-size-fits-all approach.
