As artificial-intelligence tools become popular sources of health advice, I asked ChatGPT to name five important health checks after 50. Its suggestions were sensible—but no general list can replace an assessment based on your history and individual risk.

1. Blood pressure

High blood pressure often causes no symptoms but contributes to heart attack, stroke and kidney damage. Home readings can be useful when interpreted correctly with your GP.

2. Blood sugar

Type 2 diabetes can develop without obvious symptoms. An HbA1c blood test may be appropriate, particularly when you have risk factors such as excess weight or a family history.

3. Cholesterol and cardiovascular risk

A lipid profile is most useful when considered alongside blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, family history and other cardiovascular risks.

4. National screening programmes

UK programmes include bowel, breast and cervical screening for eligible groups. Decisions about tests outside national programmes—such as PSA testing—need an informed discussion of potential benefits and harms.

5. Kidney and liver health

Testing may be appropriate when risk factors, medication or symptoms suggest a need. Routine testing should still have a clear clinical purpose.

The measure ChatGPT missed

Waist circumference can add useful information about metabolic risk. The important point is not to collect every possible test, but to select checks that are relevant to you and act thoughtfully on the results.
